The Park Avenue Synagogue in New York City will show the work of fiber artist Heather G. Stoltz and ceramics artist Jo Kamm July 21 through October 31. Stoltz, who was born and raised in Woodbridge CT, discovered her love of fiber art when studying for a Masters in Women’s Studies at the Jewish Theological Seminary. The exhibition, "Text and Texture: Midrash Through Making" will run through October.
Stoltz’s work has been shown nationally and has been featured in Creative Quilting: The Journal Quilt Project, Zeek Magazine, and Practical Matters. She also teaches fiber art workshops at synagogues and community centers throughout the Northeast.
Stoltz’s work which will be exhibited at the Park Avenue Synagogue explore different forms of prayer. Several of the pieces are inspired by traditional Jewish liturgy while others depict her deepest personal prayers. Those attending the opening of the exhibition will be invited to add their own prayers to one piece titled Flinging Prayer. Through this interactive fiber art piece, she will encourage participants to write their prayers on a fabric carrier and fling it onto the piece with the use of a small catapult.
