Position Description: Assistant Facilities & Maintenance Director (AFMD)

FLSA Classification: Exempt / Full Time / Salaried

Reports to: Facilities & Maintenance Director (FMD)


This position is responsible for assisting with the overall maintenance and upkeep of the JCC Campus and building. All duties are performed in compliance with federal and state laws and regulations and local ordinances.


● Hire, train, and supervise all housekeeping/maintenance staff

● Develop a comprehensive plan to maintain the highest standards of housekeeping and cleanliness required at the center, while not interrupting the flow of normal business operations, including the day-to-day scheduling of personnel to perform regular cleaning, straightening up, and disinfecting of the rooms, walls, floors, windows, showers, fixtures, equipment, etc.

● Schedule and supervise the staff to perform cleaning and room set ups for the main building and outside facilities, ensuring the smooth workflow of all departmental functions

● Ensure housekeeping/maintenance staff are aware of and trained on safety, security and emergency procedures in accordance with company policies and OSHA guidelines

● Assist the FMD with the development and implementation of a preventative maintenance program

● Maintain appropriate MSDS for all products used by the housekeeping/maintenance department

● During periods when the center is closed from the members, more extensive housekeeping and cleaning plans must be completed.

● Assist the FMD with maintaining attendance records and performance appraisals of the staff

● Issue corrective action as required in conjunction with Human Resources

● Interact daily with department heads to discuss special needs (fix broken equipment, set-up chairs and tables for special events, hook-up sound equipment, move furniture/equipment, etc.) and schedule staff to provide services needed

● Demonstrate a commitment to high standards and inspire those qualities in others

● Assist the FMD with all other day to day tasks as needed


● Report to the FMD on a daily basis and advise if/when major equipment purchases may be needed

● Assist the FMD with facilities repairs and upkeep such as plumbing, electrical, painting, carpentry, refrigeration, ground maintenance, masonry, lighting, ceiling tiles, flooring and general contracting tasks

● Work with the FMD and outside contractors to ensure landscaping, grounds maintenance, and outside appearance, including snow plowing and sidewalk shoveling are carried out in a timely fashion and in accordance with contracts and department responsibilities

● Ensure the building’s security system is maintained in accordance with contracts and departmental responsibilities

● Assist the FMD in operating the department within budget and report discrepancies/overruns immediately

● Assist with ensuring all expenditures for department remain within budget allowances, review monthly operating statement for accuracy and explain variances to budget

● Implement established emergency policies and procedures. Respond to emergency service calls. Prepare and maintain required records, reports, analyses and studies

● Maintain audio visual equipment and troubleshoot when necessary

● Provide technical support for presentation equipment and troubleshoot as necessary

● Perform other assignments/special projects from time to time as directed by management


● High School diploma or GED required

● Bachelor degree in engineering or related field, preferred

● Knowledge of fire safety and MSDS training preferred

● Computer literate; Microsoft Office skills required, including word and excel

● Basic math skills

● At least five (5) years experience in all aspects of cleaning a large recreation facility including stripping and waxing floors, identifying and selecting proper chemicals and equipment for assigned tasks, power washing, carpet cleaning, identifying and solving cleanliness related problems

● At least three (3) years supervisory experience

● Good verbal and written communication skills

● Excellent planning and organization skills

● Excellent interpersonal skills, and the ability to work well and communicate with others

● Ability to read, and interpret general business periodicals, or governmental regulations. Ability to read blueprints and mechanical drawings. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals as required

● Bi-lingual (Spanish) preferred


● Working outside in various weather conditions is required

● Occasionally need to climb ladders, work on a roof or in small cramped places

● Will come into contact, and interact, with center members, outside vendors, and leaders of the business, religious and political community


● This position involves standing, bending, walking, kneeling and reaching most of the workday

● Ability to lift up to 51 lbs. without assistance, per NIOSH guidelines

● Must have a high degree of manual dexterity and the ability to use hand tools
