Rabbi Tamar Elad-Appelbaum, one of Tablet’s “10 Israeli Rabbis You Should Know,” and the Forward’s “Five Women Rabbis in Israel Making a Difference,” will speak at BEKI on Saturday, April 6 at 1:00 pm, following services and kiddush lunch. The community is welcome.
Elad-Appelbaum founded Kehillah Zion, a thriving Masorti community in the Baka neighborhood of Jerusalem. “We invite you to come as you are,” their Facebook page announces, and they have attracted an unusually diverse community--Orthodox and secular, Sepharadi and Ashkenazi. Their services, including holiday ceremonies at the old train station in Jerusalem, feature original prayers and melodies created by contemporary poets and musicians.
Elad-Appelbaum also devotes her energy to human rights work and interfaith dialogue, including a program at the Jewish Theological Seminary called “Songs for the Holy City: An Interfaith Evening of Music and Prayer.”
