Author Roya Hakakian will speak about Women, Life and Liberty: Current Protests in Iran, after services and kiddush lunch. Born and raised in Tehran, she arrived in the U.S. in 1985. Her writing includes the memoir Journey from the Land of No: A Girlhood Caught in Revolutionary Iran; Assassins of the Turquoise Palace, about the shooting of Iranian and Kurdish opposition leaders in Berlin in 1992; and her latest book, A Beginner's Guide to America. An active thinker of foreign relations, she is a founding member of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center and currently serves as an editorial board member of World Affairs. In the book Political Awakenings by University of California at Berkeley’s Professor Harry Kreisler, she was highlighted “among the most important activists, academics, and journalists of her generation.”
