Barry Vine requested that this powerful film be brought to our community. We are screening it to honor Barry's wishes.
The movie explores how someone can grow up and not see (or believe) what is taking place mere feet from Auschwitz. This documentary follows Rudolf Hoess' son (Hans) and grandson (Pastor Kai Hoss) as they visit the camp where Rudolf was the Commandant; responsible for killing over 1 million Jews during the Holocaust. Hans grew up adjacent to the concentration camp but did not know what was going on in the camp. He describes his childhood as idyllic.
As a teenager Kai learns of his grandfather's actions during the war. As a Pastor he must reconcile his Christian faith with the atrocities his grandfather was responsible for. Hans learns a lot during the making of the documentary. In fact he visits an Auschwitz survivor in her London home. Hans' sister, however has no interest in seeing her father as anything less than wonderful.
This is a thought provoking film and provides different perspectives on the same events.
