Tolerance Trumps Hate

Dear Friends:

We can no longer dismiss the constant flow of outrageous statements made by Donald Trump as he pursues the Republican nomination for President of the United States. Mr. Trump's uncensored rhetoric has gained him attention, criticism and support. This time he has gone too far.

His call for a "total and complete shutdown" of Muslims seeking to enter the United States, as tourists and immigrants, is nothing but unadulterated hatred. It is every American's responsibility to speak out against bigotry and religious intolerance. I believe that all citizens who believe in our nation's principles and freedom of religion must firmly condemn Trump's pandering for votes.

Trump tweeted that "we must be vigilant" about the "influx of hatred and danger" coming into our country. It is Trump, himself, who spews forth hatred: It is Trump who is a danger to the fabric of our society. It is Trump's bombast and tongue which is a sharp weapon endangering our democracy.

As we light the fourth candle on our menorahs this evening, let us affirm that the freedom to practice our religion that the Maccabees fought for more than 2,000 years ago is worth protection.

Let the lights we kindle burn bright and the torch of liberty on Ellis Island be a beacon for all seeking safe haven.
