Blue Marlins Dive Into 23rd Season

By Nicolle Camara

Health & P.E. Associate Director

The JCC Blue Marlins Swim Team is beginning their 23rd season. Our swim team coaches Amy Lyons Kemler, Gaelen Rhoads, Chris Maursky and Pat Sundermann are looking forward to another very exciting and fun-filled year.

The JCC Blue Marlin swim team is a developmental team for children between the ages of 6-18 years old.

Our swim season runs from mid-September until March and the swimmers practice three times a week.

During these months, they work on learning or improving the four main strokes, flip turns, diving, endurance and how to use a pace clock.

They will also compete in several swim meets against other JCCs and local YMCAs. The JCC organizes fun nights for the children so that they can interact with each other outside the pool. The final week of the season, we will compete in a championship meet and end with a banquet.

On Nov. 16, we will hold the 15th Annual Emma Sundermann Swim-A-Thon. Emma Sundermann passed away at a young age, but she loved swimming for the JCC Blue Marlins. In her memory, her parents started a fundraiser which allows the swim team to raise money for the JCC pool.

Coach Pat (Emma’s mom) is a very important part of this team, and the swimmers love this event because they know that they are honoring her daughter.

If your child would like to be a part of the swim team and learn about a very healthy lifelong activity, please contact Coach Amy at (203) 387-2424 x270.
