SUMMER FUN

Each year, JCARR families search for summer opportunities for their children with the help of JCARR partners and friends. This summer, JCARR volunteers Brian Dore and Maria Landers spearheaded the effort to enroll Carlota and Cecilia in HORIZONS NATIONAL- an exceptional six-week national program designed to “…advance equitable learning opportunities for students.” Once accepted, students can continue attending the summer program through eighth grade. Support for the children extends beyond the summer, with staff members meeting periodically with Carlota and Cecilia during the year as they continue to mentor the girls. The program has a modest application fee but is otherwise free.

Located on the Foote School campus, HORIZONS provides a variety of activities, including basic academics aimed at preventing typical summer slide and advancing students’ learning. In addition to the basics, Carlota and Cecilia enjoyed arts and crafts, music, hobbies, field trips, and swim lessons.

The girls also liked having the family included in events such as family night, where their parents and siblings met the teachers, visited their classrooms, met other students and families, sampled food from the food trucks, and watched their performances.  The girls had perfect attendance and were described as exemplary students by their teachers. Carlota and Cecilia, who loved going to Horizons, said, “It’s the best.” They look forward to returning next summer when Rebeca, their younger sister, can also participate.

Rebeca was too young to attend the HORIZONS program this summer. Brian and Maria enrolled Rebeca in the New Haven Lawn Club summer camp program. This half-day program provided arts and crafts, swim, and tennis lessons. Rebeca’s swimming has improved. After their six-week program ended, Carlota and Cecilia enjoyed time at the Club.
